From just a foot away in a purple heart wood dug out canoe we sat at dusk as this 10in diameter flower bud opened slowly in front of our eyes. Its white color, odor, and night-time opening attracts insects that chow down on its sticky nectar. This mutual relationship benefits both parties: feeding the insect and pollenating the flower..
